Scarlett Hughes, Air Force Spouse

Scarlett Hughes exemplifies thoughtfulness and unwavering dedication in ensuring the inclusion and support of military spouses.

Throughout her husband's service in the Air Force, which extended until his retirement in 2019, Scarlett selflessly devoted her time to numerous volunteer activities. Among her roles at the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club, one of the most notable was serving as the Welcome Chair. Under her leadership, newcomers were greeted with the warmest of welcomes. Having lived in Germany for several years, she recognized the challenges faced by those arriving in a new country. In response, she crafted a comprehensive welcome book containing guidance on essential apps to download, recommended shopping locations, key German phrases, and valuable travel tips. Not only did she create these books, but she also personally assembled them and ensured that each new member received a copy.

Scarlett's dedication to volunteer work extended to the Ramstein Bazaar, where she generously contributed her time and effort for sixteen bazaars. She was actively involved in various committees, including the Bazaar Leadership Team, and played a pivotal role in fostering a welcoming environment for International vendors, addressing their needs and concerns.

Among her many responsibilities, Scarlett took on significant roles within the Americans Working Around the Globe (AWAG) conference, serving as the Corporate Relations Director.  Her efforts were dedicated to advancing the AWAG mission of training, strengthening and connecting volunteers and military spouses around the globe.

Beyond her formal roles, Scarlett consistently extended a helping hand, whether it was providing a meal, baking cookies for the Airmen Cookie Drive, or actively participating in Operation Allied Refuge (OAR) with the Red Cross. She encourages spouses to support and uplift each other, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, she was recently honored with the Gold Presidential Award for Volunteerism. By welcoming others with open hearts, we forge connections that light the path to a brighter future. Remember that your dedication to volunteering can also spark positive change and leave an indelible mark on our military communities. The more we welcome, the stronger we become.
